About Susanna

I'm an abstract artist based in Norwich, Norfolk. For as long as I can remember, being creative has been an outlet for me. Art has always created a space to process and make sense of life and has often enabled me to express what I struggle to say with words. Initially beginning with ceramics, my work has evolved over the years into intuitive abstract painting. I grew up with a love of travelling and an interest in people and different cultures. This grew as I moved to South Africa after finishing my A Levels and has continued as I have travelled and experienced different cultures, most recently Germany, where I lived for 5 years. A couple of years ago I found my way back to Norfolk with my husband and little girl. It was during this international move that painting quite simply became a necessity for me.

Starting a degree in Psychology in 2022 has enabled me to explore the relationship between art and psychology in my work. It is art as a therapeutic practice that drives me, and I consider the study of this subject to be integral to my work.

My art practice

My art practice is heavily influenced by nature and the calm it has always brought into my life. I draw from the beauty and complexities of everyday life and work primarily with acrylics on canvas to intuitively play with colour and composition.

When I start a new piece, I have little to no plan as to what I am about to create. More often than not, the first layers on the canvas are an exploratory release of emotions. As I continue, the way the painting is going becomes clear. The build-up of these layers in itself has become an important part of my process. Each layer is significant to the final piece, even if not visible at the end. Much like our lives, depth is created here. It's my hope that my paintings inspire and impact the spaces where they hang and as a result the people around them. What do you see?
